Company Profile

M&T Systems Headquarters

Owners Pat Toland and Mike Mullen

M&T Systems is a privately held company located in Santa Rosa, California, and is a leading provider of Polycold refrigeration repair services.

History:
Founded in late 2004 by Mike Mullen and Pat Toland.

In October of that year, the two would be owners got together for some initial talks as to launching a company specializing in the repair of Mechanical Vacuum Pumps, Vacuum Equipment, and Helium based Cryo Pumps. They had a mutual friend by the name of Ralph Brogan from Pumps International, who was interested in having them rebuild various vacuum related pumps. This seemed like a great idea, and would help them through the lean times that inevitably befall a newly formed company, such as the one that they were soon to begin.

Now having a good idea of what their company would be about, Mike and Pat consulted with their attorney Brad Demeo, and drew up a business contract. Soon after, a building was located in northwest Santa Rosa that seemed to suit the needs for this new venture. A business name of "The Pump Shop" was settled upon, a license was secured, and a bank account was opened for all the money they were hoping to make. They were off and running. Or so they thought...

In the first year they quickly discovered that the business of rebuilding pumps was not going to be a big money maker. Too many people were already in this market, and many companies would simply use their own maintenance people to do the work themselves. Lean times were upon them. It was during this time that a new opportunity presented itself...

Often times when Mike or Pat were out in the field, they found themselves being asked to take a look at the Polycold water vapor cryopumps that were also at these facilities. Pat having worked previously as a Service Manager with Polycold Systems (now a part of Brooks Automation), had the background required, and the experience necessary to do repair work on these units. It quickly became apparent that there were many companies urgently in need of someone who could maintain and repair their Polycold units. Mike having many years of vacuum related experience acquired from working at OCLI and Deposition Sciences, and having some familiarity with the Polycolds used on their vacuum systems, quickly took up the challenge as well. Soon a new company, M&T Systems, was born.

Initially they tried to keep the pump work that had first launched the company, and combine it with their new venture of servicing Polycold units. However the two partners soon found themselves getting more business then they alone could handle. It was like the Polycold genie had been let out of the bottle, and there would be no putting it back. It was through this realization that, Mike and Pat then decided to focus their company's efforts almost entirely on doing service, and repair of these systems alone.

Entering 2006, they had expanded their staff, brought in a former R&D Design Manager of Polycold Systems, and added a couple of new people in the field who would soon be trained in the art of repairing Polycold units. This would also be the year that M&T Systems formed a business relationship with Brooks Automation, new owners of Polycold Systems.

Where do we go from here:
It is the goal of M&T Systems to excel in the Polycold service and repair field. We have experienced much success from this endeavor already, and would like to carry this on into our future. At the same time, we recognize that we are a company made up of people with very diverse, and valuable skills. It is hoped that we will continue to find new ways, and opportunities to better utilize this greatest of all assets.
